you could have a look on   cnet  and read the reviews of the top five free downloads. A good one is spyware terminator it caries its own anti virus and anti spy ware.
If you are going away from Norton you may have problems getting it off

Try Avast antivirus. Free and does the job. I've had this on countless friends and families' PCs; who didn't want to pay for anything.

As a fellow red, I'd try to steer you towards using AVG free for antivirus http://free.grisoft.com and the free version of ZoneAlarm for the firewall. I use it on all of mine (I work in IT and can get most things free, but still choose to use these).

Norton is nowt but a pig, and not even very effective, I gave up using it a few years ago..

A good alternative free firewall is COMODO.
Google for link.
I use this over Zone Alarm since the last update to Zone Alarm made the product more bloated.

Agree with robinofthehood
AVG, Zone Alarm and also Spybot - Search & Destroy are all you need provided you regularly update

If it was a red cat it wouldn't be stupid enough to chase its own tail  ;) ;) ;).
I'm not saying all blues fans are stupid  ;) ;) ;).

Thanks all for the advice its been a great help.
Has anyone used firefox? How would I go about using it? Is it just a case of downloading it and clicking on the desktop icon to use it? I don't want to remove IE 7 but would like to give firefox a go.

I don't think you can remove IE7 it's part of Windows, you may be able to disable it though. Download Firefox and install, it's quite easy. You may also like to try Thunderbird (also from Mozilla), it's a very good email client.

Firefox is excellent, and there are lots of plug-ins that you can add to it eg anti-phishing filters, weather forecasting tools, and my fave NoScript which stops all the annoying stuff on webpages (such as pop-up links on here!).

Miles better than IE. :)
