Is it too late for sweetcorn?

Some of my sweetcorn plantlets have been munched over the past couple of days. I only have a block of 9, and was wondering if it's too late to sow a couple more now...to fill in the gaps? ???

Any ideas? The variety is Incredible F1, if that helps.

Yay! ;D I think I'll give it a go.

I always start them off indoors in loo rolls to give them a good start. I'll pop some in tomorrow.

If we get a summer that lasts well into Autumn like last year...then maybe I'll be lucky? And if not....well....nothing ventured, nothing gained! ;)

Hi creckless, i sowed mine today because in the other sweetcorn thread it said 'nothing to lose' - perhaps we'll compare notes later in the season & see what we've ended up with  ;)  ;D

I'll report back...but it's my first try with sweetcorn...so don't expect too much! ;)

Judging from the last few years....I've decided to be a bit more relaxed about "when to plant" etc, as our seasons seem to be changing.....but seed packets don't seem to be keeping up with this change.  ::)

Last summer went on well into October....who knows...we may have fresh sweetcorn when nobody else does! Either that, or it will catch up.
I'd be interested to see how my new sowing compares to some sown a few weeks ago.

You don't need the loo roles, start them in 3 inch pots and transfer to the ground when 3 weeks old, don't delay this as corn has an internal clock that stops if they stay too long in the pots,they pick up but take longer, so the 3 weeks is crucial if you haven't got much time.

Tora, don't chuck them, plant them , they will be OK, they just sit still for a while, but planting them will be quicker than starting again.XX Jeannine

My first batch of sweetcorn were in their pots for a couple of months, because silly me sowed them far too early. They have been in the ground now for around 2 months, are stunted, (IMHO) only 2 foot tall, but already have cobs forming. Never grown it before, but was expecting them to be at least 4 foot tall before producing cobs.

Well, i've been away for a few days, and upon my return they've already germinated  :o

I'm taking it I can harden them off for a couple of weeks then plant, to give them the longest possible growing time  ???

Will take some pics (and find the cable to upload them to my laptop  ::) ) and post at some point

At this time of year you can sow directly.  They get away quickly with no check.  Sow 2 or 3 to each hole and once through, whip out the weakest.  I did this last year, and will do again in a couple of weeks time once my International Kidney spuds are cleared.  You might not get huge cobs like those started a couple of months back in the greenhouse, but you will still get 2 or 3 good sized cobs per plant.

I'm thinking of putting ours out asap (as soon as rain stops ::) ) despite a slight lack of hardening off, and I think i'll also sow some more direct & see if they come to anything.

I think I'll sow another batch of sweetcorns directly as well.  ;D Good to hear that I can still sow them... 2-3 cobs per plant sounds pretty good!

Half of mine were munched by slugs too... I sowed some more direct last night so fingers crossed! I'm growing them with butter nut squash (also good slug food apparently) and dwarf beans.

I finally planted out the pot-bound seedlings today.  ::) I'm going to sow more directly tomorrow. :)

I sowed 16 Incredible F1 in big pots about a week ago and 13 are up - will be planting them out in my 1st early spud bed soon. can't wait for freshly picked corn on the cob... mmmmmmm :P ;D
