Please can anyone recommend a mobile that is simple and easy to use, and would be suitable for my elderly FIL? He is in his 80s and by his own admission is not very technically minded, and has arthritis in his hands so isn't very dexterous. I'm looking for a phone that has large buttons and is fairly basic - he would use it just for making calls and texting. I'm wondering if anyone has a similar experience. We've looked at lots of phones but they seem to be getting smaller and smaller!

I find the nokias the most easiest phones to deal with - i cant operate any other to be honest. and they do chunky phones too... just need to look about.

Orange were doing a very good phone aimed at those who just wanted simple...
Big keys - and all it did was phone & text if you need.  NOthing fancy - MIL did not want all singing all dancing - did not want camera/ipod etc etc - just wanted a phone.  IT was a while ago - but she did go and make enquiries.  After all of her towing and frowing - she decided that she did not need one - she had managed for years without one, so would continue as she had been..... NOt much help I know, but there are simple phones out there.
Good luck

I don't think you can buy them new any more, but I got one at the market (secondhand), and it's an excellent basic mobile phone of the type that used to be used by reps etc. At the time there were also some available on Ebay, but haven't looked for ages.

It is a NOKIA 6210e. Has a long battery life, no stub aerial sticking out, not too heavy, and is extremely easy to handle and to use. It does everything I require from a mobile phone....it makes and receives phone calls...LOL.

I changed to it from a Motorola flip/camera phone because I bought a car that had the handsfree cradle for it already fitted, and it's the best phone I've had.

See a picture of it herehttp://images.uk.ask.com/fr?q=Nokia+6210e&desturi=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.clarity.it%2Forange%2F6210e.htm&fm=i&ac=24&ftURI=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.uk.ask.com%2Ffr%3Fq%3DNokia%2B6210e%26desturi%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.clarity.it%252Forange%252F6210e.htm%26imagesrc%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.clarity.it%252Forange%252F6210e_size.jpg%26thumbsrc%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252F65.214.37.88%252Fts%253Ft%253D8534181915934634461%26thumbuselocalisedstatic%3Dfalse%26fn%3D6210e_size.jpg%26imagewidth%3D81%26imageheight%3D174%26fs%3D4%26ft%3Djpg%26f%3D2%26fm%3Di%26ftbURI%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fuk.ask.com%252Fpictures%253Fq%253DNokia%252B6210e%2526page%253D1%2526pstart%253D&qt=0

EDIT... Should have added that I had mine unlocked at the market and now use it on Virgin pay as you go tarrif... no monthly rental, and only pay for what you use.  I don't use mine very much, it's more for emergencies in the car etc.,( tend to make general calls from home on the land line phone) so £20.00 credit has lassted me absolutely ages.

I would go for a basic Nokia too.  I have an old one that my boys wouldn't be seen dead with, but it does the job and I don't need a camera or anything. It is simple to use and would be fine for your FIL.  It is similar to the Nokia on the link from Brogusblue and Quizzical.

Thank you for all the advice. I have passed everything onto hubby, who is the technical one! We hope to get FIL a new phone soon!
