No sign of garlic after 6 weeks

Hi all. No sign of my garlic that was planted about 6 or 8 weeks ago... I'm not very good with garlic - so can anyone tell me if this is normal? I haven't had a firkle yet, but suspect the worst.

I planted mine with the japanese onions in the last week of October, the onions were showing after a couple of weeks, but the garlic hasn't sprouted yet.

Give one a tug, as mine are all busy rooting........ :)

they won't be doing much at this time of year especially with these widespread frosts, mine haven't shown yet - as long as the soil is good and the garlic from good stock they'll be fine, don't worry  ;)

It seems to be a general problem this year. There was another thread on this topic. On our site one plot holder planted his in late Sept and they were only just peeping through in early Dec. Ours were planted at the end of Oct, and like yours have not appeared yet.

I've had this same problem with Garlic cloves saved from this years crop - last winter they were above the soil and had a few leaves but this generation - zilch!

However the bulbs I bought from the shop have rocketed up and are currently getting frozen.

Did you plant from last years crop as well?

I planted German Red and Spanish Rioja, both bought. Planted Solent Wight & Purple and saved anonymous (but another soft neck) today. I'm not too worried as there's not much else I'd use the ground for at the mo... More interested to know what to expect...

My saved garlic is from a French plait I was given a couple of years ago it's up, so is my English garlic from last years saved cloves. I think I planted both end of September though  :).

One variety I grew a couple of years ago didn't show above ground till March but boy did they have roots and soon caught the other varieties up.

I'm quite relieved to read these posts as I was beginning to wonder whether my garlic had rotted in the ground.  Shall stop worrying now (for a bit anyway)

I don't think it matters too much to the plant whether it has above-ground growth this time of year or not, but they do need to have their root systems well established to give the best harvest.

I got worried and firkled one of mine 2 weeks ago, and it had a terrific root system. Haven't been back since, but I'm optimistic.

I had a look at mine this afternoon, and a few of them are up. No doubt the rest are OK.

My Solent Wight have been in the ground in a sheltered part of the garden since the end of October and they're got about 5 inches of growth on them at the mo so I've been well impressed. My onions on the other hand that went in very late at the end of November have hardly done anything, I think there's a couple of little shoots but thats about it. I'm just hoping they wake up ok in the new year... :)

Put mine in three weeks ago in pots placed in the cold greenhouse, I've got about 4 inches of growth aready :o

I tried planting outside last year......waste of time as they all rotted.

tip; I bought my bulbs from the supermarket (25p) you still have time to catch up, no problems

I hope you all got the roots starting sprouting before you planted them. I normally let them sit in damp newspaper for a couple of weeks and they all come up regardless of the weather. ;)

My albigensigen wight is up, they were huge cloves. The other varieties i planted there are some up but not many. My red onions (electric) planted at the same time are up.

My elephant garlic is up but not my ordinary. However, my peas (that I planted very late, in November) were up today - if they hadn't rotted in the ground in this weather then I reckon the garlic's fine.

Neither my elephant garlic or normal garlic is up yet and they were planted about 5 weeks ago - so like others relieved to read this thread. Interestingly my daff's planted around the same time also haven't shown through yet and usually I can see the tips by now - maybe its this funny old year.

My daffs were also beginning to show by this time last year, which I thought was far too early. Maybe we're just having a normal winter - the last two have been very mild.
