Hi we have just found a plot and will be signing for it on wednesday.
Its local to us and has been left for some time though its not
overgrone at all. It wont take long to get it in to shape. however we
are novises and could do with any advice, how to prepair the soil is
the main thing.

Thanks

welcome franklynn. congratulations on your new plot. very exciting. it will soon be busy busy busy so my advice if the gound is not too bad is to dig it over as much as possible and get some manure or compost into it.  then decide how you wnt your plot to look. beds or rows etc. plan what crops youwould like to try. some will work some wont. you can get some things in very soon (or now) such as early peas onions and shallots and garlic.  dont put manure on the area where you want carrots and other roots though.

tell us a bit more about your plot and what sort fo things you would like to  grow.  :)

'Don't try and dig it all at once' was the best advice I got - and tried to ignore!  ;)We eventually got some of the plants to do the work. Spuds in particular. And if you can take lots of photos so you can see how far you've come, particularly on the days when you seem to have been jumping up and down on the same spot picking out couch grass roots. It's well worth it to reveal the crumbly brown loveliness. Our plot hadn't been used in eight years and so was in need of lots of manure to give it a kick start. Ask around on the site they may have sources, we get ours free from Leeds CC we just harass them until they give in!
Good Luck and enjoy - much more fun than gym membership in the NEw Year! :D :D

sorry, no its not too late (too early actually) - what i mean is dont put manure on the area where you plan to grow root crops particularly carrots and parsnips; the reason being that those veg will fork and go funny shapes if there is any obstruction to their downward .....groove.   :D
