Garlic Bulbs

I was given some garlic which I planted in November - The green bits are now sticking out of the ground and I was wondering, how would I know when it is ready? Do I need to do anything know to it?

....do nothing but wait for a while, Nick. The garlic will grow and grow & around June/July time ask the question again, eh? Cograts btw...it's always exciting to see it coming through, isn't it.

oh i am sooo glad i am not the only one who does that.Got my allotment in september and garlic and onion are the only things growing so far. I am always going down to check on them lol  :-[

From what I've read, there seems to be a consensus that it's a good idea to give garlic a feed of potassium and sulphur from late Feb onwards - (I think monthly but it may be just one or two times). Sulphate of Potash would meet the requirement.

I've had to protect my garlic from pheasants. I thought pigeons were bad, but pheasants will eat ANYTHING! I guess they were sick of the cabbages.

I have yards and yards of netting waiting to be used. The pigeons won't be eating at my expense  ;D

I'm in my 5Th year growing garlic i just plant it in November and forget about it ;D
i then harvest it at the end of October no feed a little water & i get better bulbs than asda ;D ;D, i also save 6/8 bulbs for seed for the nxt year. i currently have over 100 plants this year as our local Italian restaurant has them off me for 4 free meals for free!! ;), which at around £30 a head that's not bad ;D.

Garlic's ready when about 10% of the plants have fallen over. Lift it than and let it dry. Depending on the variety, this will be in June or July.

No, M. The bulb stays underground, but you can carefully scrape away a little soil now and again to see how they're doing.
