I wanted to go out into the greenhouse and do some sowing this afternoon, but I was feeling a little chilly in the Gh so I decided to light some tea lights and see if it would make a difference to the temperature. It went up from 14.5, and now it is 19.1 and about an hour ago (while I was still in there) it reached 22.4.  :o

Were you breathing hard? ::) ;D

Glad to here it!!

My nan has used tealights for years to raise the temp in her unheated lean to greenhouse, she swears by them!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

we used to keep one burning in the outside toilet (showing my age ), used to keep the pipes unfrozen  ;D

star

We had a candle in the toilet as well, if it was really cold, we'd light it. :P

The morning flit across the lino, the ice on the inside of the windows.

Memories grave and grey.

I buy the church type candles when i see them at car boot sales ,there cheap and do a great job of keeping my 6x4 greenhouse in back garden frost free , my floor in there is concrete and i just put them in a metal dish on the floor if needed over winter.

Plum

I use candles to help keep small greenhouse frost free. I stand them in damp sand

gunnerbee

thats a great idea, i have lots of candles lurking about here!!

calendula

trouble is when YOU are in the g/h as well your own body heat will help make the temperature rise - so the acid test would be to record temperature changes with just the candle burning and no body heat as extra  :)

Plum

We have a wireless thermometer and have proved they raise the temperature

Not to mention the  :o   of a cold wooden toilet seat.

kenkew

....not to mention, as a kid, running down the street with no pants on and the firery end of a rolled up newspaper to light the way and to run under the wooden seat to kill the baddies lurking there and to try and complete the mission before burning fingers...hardest job was unlocking the frozen loo door with a huge iron key!

 ;D ;D ;D.....BUT BY GUM, YOU WERE HAPPY......... ;D ;D

does anyone remember the outside toilets years and years ago that seemed to be virtually bottomless but every now and again the barrel would go down, empty by turning over I guess and then come some way back up - very scary when you're a kid whether in the day or night - my grandmother's sister had one of these in lincolnshire

sorry for hijacking the thread perhaps it could be renamed 'candles in the wind'  ;D

We called them the long drop , they were part of a tippler system ,
the water from the sink filled the counter weighted bowl when the water overcame the weight it tippled and ran down the pipe into the base of the toilet.

Did you have a cotton bobin tied with string to your key ?

star and froglegs, the nearest thing we got to central heating was when you curled up round your hottie bottle in bed ;D
