I know I cannot serve meat and dairy together.................but is mayonnaise classed as a dairy product? Have some sandwiches to make and was thinking chicken ceaser, but then thought no because the mayo would be classed as dairy! Am I right? ???

Thanks

DottyP! What an interesting question....it's sent me to Good Old Google & I've happened upon a blog of a Jewish lady who's returned to her kosher roots.....so she writes...

.., pork products being the first to go. Then I struggled to relinquish shrimp, New England clam chowder, steamed mussels. California rolls were missed, until I found salvation in "imitation crab." Then came the meat and dairy conundrum, which wasn't that bad, barring the loss of chicken Caesar salads and my mom's grilled bleu cheese steak. The mere thought of it still makes me drool...

So I reckon the answer's no...you'd certainly not be able to do the parmesan shavings anyway..

Well! that was interesting....back to the boring stuff I was doing before I peeked in here :-[

;D

Jeannine

Hi you can buy Kosher mayo that can be combined with meat as it is dairy free(pareve)  Gefen make a few salad dressing and a couple of mayo's I think.

I grew up with a very strong Jewish influence, most of my parents friends were Jewish, we ate a lot of Kosher food and I learned very young the rules.

Have tons or recipes if you need them.

Sainsbury's French Mayo is Lactose free... so that will be Kosher!
;D
Products suitable for Vegans are also a good sign...

It has just dawned on me, are you serving Kosher to Jewish folks or Halal  to Moslems, they are not actually the same rules.

My VERY vague brief was " kosher food for Arabic gentlemen" So I have sort of gone from there.........................the mayo is now out cos I have to serve this tomorrow! And it being a Bank Holiday weekend it was a tad short notice.........ie: Thurday 4pm!!!
It is a working lunch so they are getting filled pittas tomorrow and sandwiches Weds, to be repeated Thurs n Friday!
Glad I got your brain working Lish! ;D Hope your boring stuff wasn't toooooooo  boring. (boring work can always be enhanced by a liberal influx of chocklit! ;) )
And Jeannine, thank you VERY much for your imput, very informative and helpful, I should have run the menu by you before I sent it off! ;) ;D
saddad, good point, I hadn't thought along those routes............was finding the whole thing a tad confusing, but hopefully I have the hang of it, and the best thing is, if I get asked again I shall be forearmed thanks to you lot! ;D ;D

Thank You All,

Pleased you've got it sorted Dotty 8).....and yes, with the aid of the remains of a choclit easter egg I did my online banking ;)

.....when I used to fly Conti Brum/NY I got fed up with the sing-song "chickenor beef?" options, so looked at the diet preferences & chose kosher...BRILL! Every flight, while the others got their chickenorbeef, a synthetic pud & a shrink-wrapped cube of processed cheese, I got a 6 course feast, eaten with proper cutlery and which ended with petit fours and proper coffee 8)

Just now tho, I've bought tkts to fly AA Heathrow/RDU in April & shall be travelling with my son who'll have been in the UK the week previously. We've booked seats together, he from the US, me from here. When he mailed me to confirm his booking he added a PS..."btw, you still Jewish?"

I never realised how complicated kosher food was. If it was me, i'd have told him to bring his own packed lunch, and it was his own fault for being such a fussy eater
