Had a pleasant surprise yesterday. Looked up the garden at the bird feeders and saw an unsual looking bird on the peanut feeder. On investigation in a bird book it turned out to be a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. This bird is red on the top of the head, whiteish front and a black and white speckled back, long beak.

As if once wasnt enough it appeared again this morning, thoroughly enjoying the peanuts and not letting any of the sparrows near the feeder until he'd finished.

You'll find he will appreciate suet.  You can buy a sheet of it from the butcher and hang it on a tree.

Got green woodpeckers that hang out on the boundary between my orchard and my neighbour's. We always leave at least one anthill for them...

All three nest in the plantation across the road, and we do see spotties (both) when food is hard to get, but the yaffles haven't yet paid us a visit.
