spacing for onions

My red barons have been in large newspaper pots for quite a few weeks now and the root s are coming tnrough, so time to plant out.  How far apart do I need to plant them, and also can I mix two different types of onions like sturon and red barons, or do then im seperate beds.

I put mine about 6" apart  the rows 12" apart.

Cant see any reason why you cant mix them.....might even do that myself  ;D

I'm growing them in bunces of three this year to save space. They may not grow as big but we'll see.

we've got white, red and yellow onions in the same bed with the shallots and elephant garlic  ;D

I've put mine 9-10cms apart (metric me ;D) and the rows the same as they are in a bed.

The closer they are the smaller they are.
My tip is to plant far enough apart to allow hoeing between the bulbs.
Also if you have any left over plant them 1 inch apart at the end of the bed and use them as spares to replace failed ones as well as "spring" onions.
You can mix varieties, or shallots in the same bed.

I hoe onions with small hand hoe.  What I really want for the job though, is an old cake slice or a very large old fashioned "bone" handle knife - the ones with the really thin blades.

Whats Better Sets Or Seeds ??

Sets are easier and a lot less messing.  But if you want really big onions it has to be seeds...
