I saw a small ad for a website in a magazine today which said:

'www.gardenstockexchange.com

Introducing people to others in their area to exchange surplus plants, vegetables etc in a friendly environment.'

I took a look at the site but the lack of detail made me suspicious.  Has anyone tried registering and if so with what results?

It looks like some sort of site for collecting details for spamming/identity theft purposes.
As there doesn't seem to be any sort of forum there.
Why would you need to give your full address just for people in your area, surely the town would suffice.

The 'tips' section was a bit bizarre.

Think I will give it a miss.   Any surplus I have,  I usually just give away anyway.  I do not expect anything in return.

I have just been on the site and have registered.

It took a name (You can enter what you like)
It needs your post code to match you up with some one in your area (of course) they would need your door number and name to be a nuisance.
I left one of my many email addresses
I did not leave a phone number

So it is safe to use and possibly a good idea. Just make sure that you restrict the information you leave for your own security.

If you want to get an unidentifiable e-mail address then hotmail and googlemail offer excellent facilities.

Another anonymous email address is HOTFOOT.  e.g.

I wonder what happens to any messages that are sent there ??

if you wont a bonafide site that does this ive met the chap who set up www.gardenexchange.com i think it is, mike sloyan, it was he who gave me the fig tree, and another a4a person is on there too, at the moment its only local to us but hes happy to sort out forums for the different areas as its in its infancy, has none of those poncy quotes either, snails may be gods creatures but by heck does it feel good to bat them next door!!!! all mine pop round for brunch with theyre flying goggles on ready...

but i think really his sites similar to this, only covers gardens as a pose to allotments? hes got a stall locally for people to pop in with swopsies so ill be doing that if its fairer weather this weekend... and tbh i think isnt this what people used to do!?!? having looked after older folks many were keen on theyre gardens and told me where things came from and they never once said oooh this came from poundland this from halls this from another expensive garden center... it was all well this i grew from seed this i had as a cutting from my sister in ireland this from my neighbour and so on, its a shame that we dont do more of this i spose, but i know all my neighbours have to swap is more of the ivy that im chopping down, pests of allsorts and weeds so at the moment im trying 2 grow stuff from seed and hope for the best! please please please let me get my plants past the slug army this yr! ive already seen too many to be comfortable with (and squished them i might add) but im stockpiling eggshells and will be round with those tomorrow... anyways wont be joining that one, the person who set it up has a few too many typos for starters, id rather speak to you guys here

Doesn't seem to be any harm in it, I got quite a friendly email from the lady who's set it up, I think it's fairly straightforward. I live in a flat so don't have any gardening neighbours and I work in London so can't really swap plants at work. Seems like a nice idea.
