All I know is that the soil has to be really firmed down hard when you plant them out. I didn't do this the first year and they all toppled over. Did it last year and got a much better crop.

hi,the way i do it is to dig a 4-6 inch deep trench, put plants in ,sprinkle some lime round, and as the plant grows i backfill the trench firming the soil each time.

Thanks for your comments so far-

Do you think adding lime helps much?  The soil round here is very chalky, and
has a ph of around 7, so i wonder if i added extra lime and upping the ph would maybe help?

Im looking to try and grow some sprout plants of giant proportions, not so much the actual sprouts but the plant itself, grow them taller.

Any helpfull suggestions appreciated!

And I've found that F1 hybrids give firmer sprouts (at least in my soil); the older ones tend to "blow". I've stuck with Maximus for the last 3 or 4 years and have always had a good crop.

And a good dollop of muck works wonders....

Last year I had a couple of plants at the bottom of my runner beans (planted next to the wigwams) They were from the same batch as my others, planted at the same time but grew to at least double the size of the ones planted at the other end of the bed. Maybe it had something to do with the nitrogen from the beans....

Something i've just been told is to sow a green manure on the patch before its used for sprouts, to add nitogen to the soil.

Seems clover is the one to go for.

Looks like nitrogen content of the soil means alot to sprouts!

Last year I grew Bedford Fillbasket.  Very large compact sprouts.  Also grew Maximus:
