Hazel tree

I have what looks to me to be a hazel tree on my allotment....but its right in front of the greenhouse........has anyone any experience of these........do you think its worth keeping in or should I give it the chop........it is getting in my way a bit but feel a bit bad chopping it down.......there again  if im not going to get much off it I suppose it may as well go.......any advice?..... ???

try coppicing it for hazel rods?

I love hazels, we've got quite a few crammed inot corners of the garden- although these are innoculated with truffles too :D

how old/large is the tree? You may be able to start coppicing now...

It's an excellent hedging plant, as long as you can cut frequently, or have space for a very overgrown hedge, as it's fast growing. The speed of growth is what makes it good for coppicing, but you need to leave it several years between cuts; if I remember correctly, it was traditionally cut every seven years.

oh right (she says after googling coppicing ;)....i'll be doing that then, thanks.  (now I best look up 'pruning saw' and see what that is...doh)
