No tis not stolen  ;D I was offered it by the farmer where we store our caravan complete with delivery. However I am having to take the tractor driver to my plot to see if he can get the tractor and trailer through the gates, if he cant he will dump it outside and Ill get some of the lads that work for me to shift it.

Hubby has just said "You do know how big 40 tons would be dont you love?"

"Umm not really but Im sure it will be enough." hehehe

I can give you the farmers name Mr Smith and if I cant cope you are welcome to some.

Ive just remembered the saying 'Im always in the sh**, only the variety and depth varyies.'
BTW the farmer also said he will arrange for his friend to give me some cow manure too.  Hehehehe I have a feeling Im going to be knee deep in sh**!

Mr Smith

Quoteand of course its hot, so what is 'hot'?

This is an extract from a book I have;

Poultry Droppings.

Droppings of all types of poultry may be used as manure.

They contain a higher percentage of nitrogen and phosphates than stable and farmyard manure, but less potash, and must be balanced by appropriate chemicals.

Weight for weight they are about four times as rich as animal manure.

One cwt. of moist droppings will dress from 24 to 40 square yards.

If dried and powdered, the quantity would have to be even more reduced, and such manure is best employed like a chemical fertilizer at 8-12 oz. per square yard.

Poultry manure should be stored under cover.

An average analysis of a moist sample is;  nitrogen 1½%, phosphoric acid  1½% potash ½-¾%.

If thoroughly dried, this would rise to nitrogen 4%, phosphoric acid 3%, potash 1½%.

Can also be used to make liquid manure in the same way as other animal manures but should be well diluted.

As I recall it won't need lime adding, particularly as the chickens may have been fed with Calcium to assist egg production so it could already be quite high in lime.

So as you see if you fed it at around the normal feeding rates you would have overdone the feeding by four times and burned ( the hot bit) the root system away.

I hope that makes things a bit clearer!

Hot chicken manure also can mean its very fresh and hasn't rotted down at all yet. Like normal manure you would need to leave it until its has cooled down (ie. rotted) and doesn't smell too much like manure anymore, otherwise it won't do your plants any good, as the bacteria that rot it down will use up available nitrates as they work in the manure, making them unavailable for the plants temporarily.

Mr Smith

Ishard,
Am I right in saying that is this farmer out at Frisby by the level crossing who does caravan storage? :)
