Planting Pots

A greengrocer in town is selling pots that are wrinkled and sprouting. Is it too late to plant any and maybe get a crop of sorts?

we stuck some in a pot, just to see  ;D
won't grow at the plot in the open ground, just in case of disease

Yes.

They will be rather late and therefore prone to blight,however you should get a crop by late September/early October.

The gound is warm so they will get off to a flying start.

The more you mollycoddle them the better, plenty of manure in a trench, and if the ground is a bit dry with no pospect of rain then a good soaking will help.

Plant a little further apart than normal to allow good air circulation that will help keep blight at bay.
