Even worse if they were neighbours?

If the washing line or the washing is causing an obstruction on a communal pathway and their litte boy is wandering over other plots then perhaps they don't realise or haven't been made aware of the rules, in which case I'd have a friendly chat with whoever's in charge who can then have a quiet word with your neighbours. That might be all it'll need.

Its a shame that you are thinking of giving up. I would chat to your neighbours and tell them you think their son is loveley but a bit of a distraction for you when he is on your plot! Be honest but pleasant. If they take offense it cant be worse than the irritation you feel at the moment! I have a couple of tips for you! maybe see what time they arrive and leave and pick times when they are not there.
Buy an ipod.. just before putting it on explain that you wont be able to hear respond if they speak to you. Children love a bit of attention if you cannot respond many kids will get bored with you. We have the same problems with a neigbours dog that is allowed to wander. I used to hate the fact that our allotments have fencing but I love it now! I always keep the gate shut now to keep the dog out!

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Yes certainly I wouldn't give up like that, let them know that you can't really be sure that the little boy is very safe while you are working, it's easy for a kid to get hit with a rake, spade etc when you are working, the safety aspect should alert them to the problem.

I don't think that they are probably allowed to have washing on their site!! Perhaps it would be worth checking the site rules and ask the committee what they think about it?

cheers all will try the friendly chat and see what happens

I'm sure that's the right approach - at least to start with. Don't give up on the plot though, there will be a away to sort it.
