...you made Butter by saving the top of the Milk for several days & then shaking it in a 2lb jar?

Or making Cream by squeezing Milk & Butter together??

And rationing did not end until 1951???

Are you sure about the end of rationing Tim? I googled and it came up with 1954. I remember being pregnant in 1953 and having a green ration book for my unborn baby.

calendula

I'm not quite old enough to remember this as I was on mother's milk at that time  ;D

You ever made paneer Tim? seems so simple but....... what a waste of milk if it doesn't work

tim

Sure, Tricia? No - but even '51 meant 11 years of discipline which wouldn't come amiss in these days?

KathrynH

Never heard of it - not even as a story from my mother or grandmother!

Hyacinth

I remember the butter trick from my grandmother Tim 8)

Carol

I remember being in Primary 2 and shaking one of them school milk bottles for a long long time trying to turn it to butter.

I also remember rationing because My Mum was so excited when Sugar was no long rationed.

Archie

I remember Cottage cheese made from sour milk.
And the American forces coming to town, 'have you any gum, chum'
And Al Read on the radio, 'you cheeky monkey'.
And helping Dad on the allotments. And seeing the D day airplanes and gliders going over, sky was black.
You make me old Tim.

Archie

Doh....Sorry just realised..recipe board.
