Yes, he was a great Yorkshireman. Wonder if they'll put up a memorial tohim at Harlow Carr, since he worked there for 20 years. I love this quote from the BBC website:

Mr Smith was an old-school gardener and staunch Yorkshireman with a golden rule: "Put the brown end in the soil, the green end above it, and you're in with a much better chance."

oooH  caroline ,  I must remember that !

To be honest I can't recollect him  --  is there a video on his time ?  Feel a certain sense of shame

   here !   sorry ,     :-[

Should have listened as I  did once plant a root tuber upsidedown  ---   but it still grew,

   with a lot effort !

I have nothing but respect for this man, he was down to earth and knew what he was on about, I remember watching his television programme in the early seventies and it was one of the best gardening shows I have ever seen on TV. very sad news of his death today.

You've said it for me Richard

Little Bee, he was 80, I believe.

I agree, a very sad day.

He used to be a presenter on Gardeners World years ago.  His enthusiasm for his subject was wonderful, and he was a joy to watch.

I remember his TV series 'Geoffrey Smith's World of Flowers'.  An example of when they used to make good gardening programmes for TV.

Another quote of his I remember was about cutting back heathers after they had flowered.  If you don't 'they'll look like a blow dried ferret'. ;D ;D

What about "Mr Smiths Gardening Programme", wish the BBC would repeat it.! You can still buy his books, totally recommend "Mr Smiths Vegetable Garden".
A true man of the soil, RIP Geoffrey.

I can remember a series of programme where he took over part of a field and turned it into a vegetable plot, there was a book with it. Why dont the Beeb do things like that now. Come on Aunty as a tribute show us the series again so that we can see a real gardener at work. He loved gardening you could see by his passion.

Meg

Didn't he have a slot on Pebble Mill at lunch time too?Yes he was a good presenter with lots of common sense.

Yes Meg I believe you're right about Pebble Mill.

He was great, such a character :D.

Its a shame he had already left Harlow Carr by the time I worked there ;)

I was born with nothing and have most of it left.
