Read the small print. The government is going to give £1,000 not £2,000. The rest is supposed to come from the car industry.

My old van is eligible for the scheme but it is bought and paid for. It starts and runs without trouble so why should I take on a debt greater than my mortgage just for shiny paintwork. It will still get stuffed with manure on a regular basis.

Put me down as against.

My car  passed its MOT today and the mechanic said it was a wonderful car. It is worth less than £2000 but if I had the money for it where would I get the rest from to buy a newer car supposedly more environmentally friendly. Oh yes! like this Government , when you have no money borrow it and repay  it sometime in the future.

Ok, so this is so we buy green cars, yes?

Who are they trying to kid, a modern car with all the plastics produces more pollutants on average than a well mainained car will in its' lifetime!!!
Also they are pushing for electric cars aren't they? I get moaned at by the council if my hedge gets too big, they're gonna LOVE an extension lead across the pavement and road (to the parking which is only on the other side of the road if not round the flippin corner  ::)) aren't they!  ::)

It's a BIG NO from me!!!

Mind you I could wire the charger into a street light!!!!  ;D

So if I had the money to buy a new car, I could buy an old banger for £100 and part ex it for a new car and get £2000 extra off the price? Sounds good to me.

No.  You have to have owned your car for 12 months.   ;D

Eristic

And it is only £1,000. The car industry is supposed to give you the rest but they have yet to say they will.  Any car firm willing and capable of knocking a grand off the price would be doing that already or would do it anyway if you traded in a two year old. (2 year old car that is)  :D

SPUDLY

What a load of tosh! If you scrap your car, and then get £2000 towards a new one, the rest of the balance will be on credit. All this in a world that's up to it's eyeballs in dept already. As has been said, the production of these vehicles has probably caused more pollution than the car will save in it's lifetime. If the government was serious about saving the planet, it would ban the manufacture and import of fuel greedy vehicles.

Wow, rant over :o

What would I get for my 16 year old... (not the car!) At the  moment anything sounds like a good deal!  :-X

Right, if these so called electric cars get off the ground, who is going to be responsible for the paying of the electric charging points? isn't this contradicting itself, i thought the idea was to save on using electric and while we are at it, I used to work in converting cars/vans to run on LPG which when first introduced we were told that the price at the pump for this would never increase but every time petrol goes up so does this! the gov keeps banging on about being green but in my opinion this save the planet is far too late!!! what about years and years ago, when i was small the only heating we had as so did many others was just a good old coal fire, so when you think of how many in this country had the same should we of not started to 'save the planet' centuries ago? what about all the wars going on, the amount of fuel these bombers use just to take off, petrol is on the increase again so doesn't that mean that food and all will go up, bus/train fares will increase again so how are we suppose to climb out of the so called resscion we are in.

I stopped driving when I was 60 and retired to save money and also because the roads had got too busy and I didn't enjoy it.  I had a bike for my 60th and love it, found don't miss the car as with the bike, walking and my free bus pass am quite happy.  You would be amazed at what I can get in my two saddle bags, also OH has a van if ever I can get him to take the petrol mower up to the allotment.  If I lived in an isolated area would probably need a car but not necessary in London.  If they have got all these new cars stockpiled why don't they just reduce the price.

I've seen cars a lot newer than my 14-year-old diesel workhorse that are chucking out smoke.  My car passes its MOT every year after a service, no problems with emissions and I still get an excellent mpg from it.

Also the smaller cars would be no good to me - if I can't get 20 bags of manure in the boot the car is not worth having.

Why should I spend a whole lot of my savings on a new car just for the sake of it?

Well Yes!

I am looking at getting a newer smaller engined car when I start getting my pension which is December!  I have a 2 litre vauxhall vectra which eats petrol - it is now very scruffy - and I was considering changing cars later on in the year!

It is just within the time limit for this - I would be unlikely to get £1000 for it as it stands!  I intend to get a small eco friendly car which I can pootle around in - no motorways around here!  Whiz up to Bristol to see son every so often otherwise pootling round town and up to lottie.  I intend to get a tow bar and a trailer so that the I can still pick up seaweed and manure but not have it inside the car.  I have two large dogs so they will have the boot space - probably the rear seat space also - and my life will be transformed!

Well maybe not transformed - but hey - I am looking forward to it.  I generally wouldn't have bought new - but this is probably going to be my last car and will have to last at least 15 years - so longer term it won't be a huge disaster.

Now what colour am I going to look at!!!!!

it seems to have worked well in Germany, but a) the Germans know how to organise things, and b) German people can buy German cars

Old bird

I have seen that BMW are offering £2000 off on their new 1 series!

I am hoping to buy a german or japanese car anyway!  I would think that you can get most makes tho obviously not the luxury BIG engined cars or 4 x 4  or anything like that!

We'll see what is the final offerings - as it stands - until the car companies come out and show what they are offering and at what price - I will then take it on its' merits.

German cars are manufactured in South Africa, Mexico, China, and many other countries, same as any other "national car" these days.

All the manufacturing that goes into making anew car and the energy to run the plants far outweighs the inefficiency of old cars.

is it in the sale?

the answer will be the rise in cheap cars as the delluge to obtain cheap rust buckets in order to get a better deal on a trade in

mark my words watch the free adds (papers) spaces on cheap cars

My car isn't worth that much either & I already only pay £35 a year roadtax  ;D. I'd be highly unlikely to ever buy a brand new shiny car only to lose that much as you drive it away anyway - much rather spend a few thousand less on a not so swish `nearly new' car & keep the 2 grand for myself..... so I think it's a `no' here too.

lewic

No way. Can't afford a new one, my Micra cost £700 three years ago and does everything I need. Average MOT work = £20! People at work with much newer cars talk about £300+ bills. Yes its probably got the crash protection of a Wilko greenhouse, but if I wanted a more solid car I would just look for a bigger slightly newer Japanese bargain.
