celery self blanching

Hi anybody tried growing celery self blanching any tips would be appreciated
seedlings just showing  growing under cover

plant in a block like sweetcorn then put straw round outside and plenty of water

I grow the golden self blanching, and put mine in a raised bed in shallow trenches which makes it easy to flood them with water. Oh, and water them a lot too.........or did someone already say that? ;) ;D

Totally ignorant on the celery front (& lots of other things ;D ;D ;D) but does it need any protection from the usual pests, birds & bugs? I bought a tray from a market stall. It is S/B & looks golden.

By flooding with water, how often do you mean? In dry weather every day? I have lots of seedlings that will be going in a raised bed too.

In the short term it just stops growing, then it becomes tough and stringy... I'd water twice or three times a week... depending on if it rained properly and feed with a liquid feed once a week... homemade "manure" water is ideal...  :)

In a block, yes - 9" apart or less.

Straw is traditional for blanching the outer plants but I reckon it adds to the slug problem.

I prefer black weed control fabric - & keep topping up the slug pellets or traps.

Fabric is easier to move & replace.

I have only in the past grown celery as a tasty herb, put in stews the tough does not matter.  This year have an area with 28 plants in a square.  Seem I have done the right thing becuase they have a mound of earth round, so can flood it.  They are outside under cloches but growing very very slowly indeed.  Things have been a little dry so perhaps they need more water.

Do you think a good mulsh will help,

I agree that the secret of growing Celery is shite and water as it is an aquatic plant, but you can give them to much water and cause heart rot.
