No,it's not a recipe! I have lots of self-sown nasturtiums growing among my onions. I'm loathe to remove them because I know they are a good companion plant and will look pretty, but will the roots affect the onions in the same way weeds do?

I can't answer for sure but what i have done with any selfsown companion plants near my tiny lot of onions is totake out te ones that are inbetween and left the ones on th edge.

the ones i did remove have been transplanted else where with a large puddling of water.

Onions don't like competiton from anything while the leaves are growing, but once they start bulbing up it doesn't seem to matter.

I'm sure I read somewhere (on a post here) that onions do better if not disturbed by weeding....so I would be tempted to leave them.

One thing I will not be repeating is nasturtiums with brassicas....that looked beautiful and suppressed weeds, but also attracted a lot of cabbage white butterfly's, whose caterpillars spread onto my brassicas! >:(
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Let me clarify that Debs!

Weeds yes flowers No.

Reason; When onions start 'bulbing' the don't want 'nitrogen' ..........the weeds use this up.

The onions want potash when they start to bulb up so do flowers! So my view is it is not a good thing..............two plants competing for the same nutrients............but then again I have never tried it so who knows?

Given how rubbish I am at weedding between onions without damaging the odd onion, I think I'll leave them for now or just pull out any that are taking over!
