I keep my garden like a wildlife refuge. I have a long, high privet hedge running along the south end of my garden where I plan to sow ramsons, as they are becoming rare around here. They would have shade all year, and plenty of moisture through the winter and spring.

Anyone got experience with ramsons?

Anyone eat them?

Where does the reference to bears come from in the latin name? ??? I don't suppose they attract bears do they  ;D

Never thought of it... just assumed it was a synonym for wild... like "Horse" and "Dog"... eg Horseradish and Dogwood... as bears have been extinct here for hundreds of years I can't see it being a problem in the UK... I assume similar in Denmark.  :-\

Good morning saddad. I heard somewhere that bears love ramsons and dig them up.

Correct, we don't have wild bears in Denmark, but I was considering sending some to a friend in Croatia. He has a weekend hut in the mountains just outside Rijeka, and HE has a bear problem  :D............not to mention moles.

I won't recommend them to my Canadian Cousin then...  ;D

I dug up a couple of bunches from a local wood last year (the bulbs are quite deep so I had to dig quite a hole to get them out) and put them in pots with some fibrous compost - they grow best in leaf mould.

They died back to nothing by mid summer and I saw no sign of them until they popped up this spring - healthy as anything. I have rememberd to water them on warm days and will plant them out soon into a permanent place - I have a semi-shaded border.
