Yard Long beans

Yard long beans........were a failure last year in my greenhouse, so mine are also still in the packet this year.

I have got okra to fruit though...... ;)

Just shows, some years things do well, and you do exactly the same thing with them another year and they are pants. Ah, the joys of gardening! ;D

I planted my yard long beans direct into the soil around a wigwam on the 9th of June, they are about 6/8 inches high, I've never done these before, I don't even know where I got them from, I just found an envelope with them in in the draw.  ???  Out of interest how high do they grow.     :-\ :-\ :-\      ;D ;D ;D

Did I miss something.  What is the connection between melons and yard long bean.

Nice to hear they are growing outside Cprnykev.  I have mine under cloches and I woulg to take it off.  They only have a few inches more of space.

Sorry it's my fault, see my post above on this thread, it's a running joke. I've been trying for years to grow decent sized melons and watermelons without success....but I'm still trying! ::) ;D

quite high so they should be happy with a six foot plus wigwam

Mine have started to grow again :o :o How far they will get remains to be seen, but they are all there.  ;D

So my three foot canes are a tad small, maybe I'll give them a f*g and stunt their growth a bit.     :o    ;D ;D ;D

I planted my beans outside and much to my surprise considering all the comments they are still alive and looking quite perky.  Quite attractive shaped leaves, but does not look like a bean at all.

When you mention okra I grew this once, but not very tasty at all.  But had fallen in love with Chicken Gumbo soup.  Came to the conclusion that the lack of heat had adversely affected the flavour.

I went to the lottie to check on the yard longs and realised that it was my Cherokee beans that were 6/8 inches high, (cheers Shirl ) the yardys are about 2 inches high so I replaced the canes with 6 foot+ poles.  ;D ;D ;D

Thought I would restart this thread. 

My yard long beans are growing slowly. Do not seem to mind being outside.  But showing no inclination to climb at all.  They are about a foot tall.  If they produce a yard long bean it will be three times the height of the plant.  Though no signs of that at all.  Kept a couple underplastic but the sun scorched some of their leaves, but they are still alive and the growing tip doing well.

Is the fleece to keep them warm or for something else.  Mine in a rather windy spot could give them a bit of fleece to keep them a bit warmer.  Growing among sweet corn, but the corn will not mind the fleece.

No, what looks like fleece is actually an enviromesh tunnel over swede seedlings and carrots. The beans are standalone!

But that has given me a good idea. :) :) 

A little wind protection fleece will give them a better time.  Top of my site very wind the wind blows across the fields and then hits the hedge and some trees and blows along them, giving my runner beans and sweet corn a bit of a draught.  Beans at the end of the row but some still get a bit of the breeze.
