Celeriac help

Last year I grew celeriac and had a little success (little being the operative word!). Whist I got 4 of edible size (and very tasty too) out of 12 plants I wondered if there was something I should have been doing to help increase their size and performance. I just let them grow, with a little feeding. Someone said that as the root grew I should have pulled off some of the leaves and this would expose more root which would swell but .....

I am growing celeriac again this year as it is one of my favourite vegetables so any help/advice would be gratefully received.

Plenty of water, a long season... and allegedly removing lower leaves, but I've never been given a reason why this should help...  :-\

You do not mention watering. Celeriac (and celery) were originally bog plants. They need lots and lots of water.

They also appreciate a well-manured or composted area.

Ah well I never knew that BAK and thanks for the link .. very useful. Looks like it's the water as you and saddad have suggested, I didn't water them any more than other veg but I will this year and see if that makes any difference.

I think I may need to water my celeriac.

Just one little question.  I started early, pricked them out and then potted on to 2" tubs.  I planted them out a few weeks ago but root growth was very poor. I had expected good growth concidering the time I planted.  Just wondering what I may have done wrong so as not to repeat next year?
Is there a particular compost they like?

Maybe I didnt water enough!

Mine were OK last year but I want them bigger this year, I only learned afterwards about taking off lower leaves and earthing up and like you Essex I didn't water it any more than the other plants. I put chicken pellets around the plants and thats gradually breaking down into the soil and I will give them a few organic vegtable feeds.  ;D ;D ;D

Mine are flowering - is this a sign of stress, or normal. I have never grown them before. Also I have hardly watered them, not knowing they were bog plants.....

hmm flowering, i would have said thats a bad sign,
thinking other roots dont get to flower do they?
i think they think they had better get on and do their thing before they die.
but i could be wrong

They shouldn't flower,  ???  unless they've gone to seed.  ???      :-\      ;D ;D ;D
