Thanks for posting the carrot www Doris :)

I can only grow carrots in containers. I have tried to grow them in the ground but have always been unsuccessful. I am going to try again next year with very careful preparation of the ground. Fingers crossed !

Have had my best year ever this year, grew them under enviromesh, expensive but should last me years............ and they have come out looking like real carrots instead of fly ridden specimens!
Am going to try the leaf mould on the carrot's this years bed after reading that!

I had a great crop this year, they grow so much better in the lottie than in the garden.  I like this link.  Lots of information.

They keep mentioning Juwarot.  Used to like this variety a lot but seem to be unable to buy seed any longer.  Does anyone know of a source?  T&M gave up on them some years ago.  Spalding bulb has them but their p&P is very expensive, and I don't want a free cheap digital camera.

Is that anything like the Jabberwok?  ;D

Does it whiffle through the tulgey wood, and burble as it comes?

Excellent website, thanks for the link.  I've had my best ever year for spring-sown carrots, virtually no fly damage whereas I am usually excavating blemishes to get a meal. I don't know what I did differently, didn't use fleece or enviromesh, but next year I am going to sow on precisely the same dates in case I just hit lucky with the carrot fly quiet season.  As that website says, home grown carrots are a world away from anything you can buy.  Worth persisting!

saddad not even close.

small maybe if told us what you did  do we could puzzle it out.

why are you so rude, mr fox?

You couldn't make it up!

Sorry, I thought I'd made it clear - you know how sometimes you know in your head what you mean?  The theory I'm working on is that my sowing date (March 22nd, E. Midlands) caught the carrot fly on the hop (or the reverse!), so I am perhaps superstitiously going to try sowing on that date again next year. No big deal if it doesn't work, I shall go on excavating.......
