How many daffodil bulbs should I put in a 3lt pot for planting out later when I know where I want them to go. They're all short ones BTW.

Depends on the bulb size.

If they're huge (size 20+), then 5-7 bulbs. (As bulbs come in packs of 10, Id make 2 pots of them).
If they're large (size 15-20) then 10 to a pot
If they're small (szie 10) then 20-25.

Just make sure they're not touching.

I presume, by short stemmed you mean dwarf narcissi, ie less than 10 inches/25 cm high eg Tete-a-tete/Jet Fire/Minnow/Sun Disk/Rip van Winkle etc. theses are size 10 (ie 10 cm circumference=3 cm/1 inch diameter)

I normally put 5 size 10s in a 3.5 inch pot, I find 5's make a nice little clump. I also do a few extra pots and position them as required at flowering time, to fill in the gaps - 3.5 inch pots are nice and easy to bury.

I put most of my spring bulbs in pots so that they can easily be moved in May and replaced with Dahlias.

None... plant tree onions and garlic instead... way prettier, smell nicer and you can eat them...... If you want something non-edible try broccolli  :-X
