Should I add grit or perlite?  Or just use normal compost?

I would advise using appropriate specialist compost - there are propriety mixes for both African Violets and Cacti. Try your local Wyevale as not all garden centres stock them.

The most important thing is to pot on into the same type of compost that they are in . Make sure they are moist when you do it and that the compost you are using is also moist. Almost any compost will do for Christmas cacti but I add a little extra grit sand to general purpose compost for A V.  They do do very well in small pots but being fed with a high potash feed.

Thanks for that.  I put them in general purpose compost as that is what they were in before.
Do you think A.V would like worm tea?  That is meant to be rich in potash.

Sorry but I know nothing what ever about worm tea so cannot really comment. The only thing is that the plants do need some nitrogen and phosphates as well so if worm tea is almost only potash it might not be too good for them.
