Is there anyone there who is in a warm enough location to grow the longer season squash. I have three kinds that I had sent from seed savers in Australia and thought it would be good to have a few grown in the UK,seeds kept then shared for the next year.

The types are

Japs..I have  had these before and grown them  in Hull in a very good summer .

Grammas.. known to every Australian but never seen them outside Australia.

Mayoral Blue..this one is very rare, the name comes from the local Mayor who grew them for many years but they stayed in the area he lived so are not even known throughout Australia, apparently he shared them with his close friends only!!

Anyway, I would like the seeds to stand a chance as I don't have many so if anyone who feels they may stand a good chance with them please contact me, maybe in a couple of years there will be enough for everyone.

I got them from last years harvest in OZ so they are very fresh.

Hi Jeannine

I don't mind trying some of the Oz hubbard squashes - I have always only grown SA hubbard squashes over in Dorset with good success.  The one I have looks a bit like the Swartz hubbard.

I could try and save some seed with hand pollinating and saving some seeds which I would be prepared to send out to other peeps next year.

Let me know and I will send you my pm.

Kind regards

How long a season do they need?

Jeannine

Hi Robert re season, frankly I don't know but I asked for someone with a long growing season in case they need it.The Japs I grew in Hull I treated as pumpkins, they are a type of Kabocha by the way. I had a parent at school a few years ago who was from Oz, she told me about the Japs  describing them as pumpkins which the Aussies call all winter squash, anyway she said she had bought pumpkins at Asda in the UK and  also squash but they were terrible compared to the Japs. Of course if she bought a Halloween pumpkin there would be no contest. Anyway I was intrigued and next time she went home she got some from her Dad and gave them to me but by the time they ran out she had moved. It was just last year that I connected with an Oz  flower and fruit grower who needed something he couldn't get there and we did a swap for some seeds. He got the Jap seeds fresh from a neighbour, the Gramma  he bought and the Mayoral Blue he begged from a seed saver!! He was not a squash grower so had no info. I also got Galapogos and Elfie tom seeds from him. So sorry but I can't help with the time but I don't want them to waste if it can be helped as I cannot get anymore.

I'm intrigued by the Mayoral Blue... I'd be interested in giving growing them a shot.
I have fresh Turks Turban and Buttercup seeds from last years crop.

I'd be interested in trying the mayoral blue, or one of the others if you're short of seed. I'll give it a try and see if I get anything. If the type of weather pattern we've been having persists, we could be in for a long, hot summer.

I'd be happy to wait for the Mayoral Blue Jeannine, when you start your list  ;)
