Hi all, was given a few cuttings yesterday,a few have buds already. I've never grown them before(or much else to be honest!)

Anyway,my allotment isn't ready to plant them out yet so was hoping to plant them in pots till I was ready. My question is what medium to put in the pot? Just compost,a mix of soil......

Many thanks fora ny advice

Save your self a job and they will be better for it.

Find a corner of your plot, sink your spade in, move it back and forth a couple of times to form a '"Vee" trench, put you cuttings in, tread along both sides of the trench to enclose the cuttings.

Then just leave them to root!

By the way one or two of your cuttings want tidying up a bit.

They are best done in Autumn... but if you keep them damp they will probably take... as TeeGee's link says you need to remove some buds..  :)

When I prune my blackcurrants in the autumn I just push a spade in to make a slit trickle some sand along the bottom(sometimes forget that bit )push the prunings in about 4"or so push the soil back and leave.I don't move them until the following Nov and have had really good success.I've got an extra four bushes fruiting after a couple of years all for free  :D

Same here. I was working today at my second plot where all the gooseberries and blackcurrants in my fruit bed are from cuttings. My new daughter-in-law was helping me (her idea, I am not a martinet) and asked what I was doing - I was pushing prunings into a slit made by spade - and was absolutely astonished to hear that some (not all....) of these prunings would grow into new bushes.

Apart from my own new bushes, I have given rooted cuttings to fill my daughter's allotment, and give plenty away. Some grow, some don't, and it is always worth trying if you have a little space.

One year I used some cuttings from a blackcurrant to mark the end of the rows for carrots.    The branch had been on the bonfire pile for several weeks as well and I was sure it was well dead.  Every one rooted.

They also root well by pinning a bit from the bush onto the ground, though red currents do this even better.
