Because I've been so caught up getting the veg garden sorted out the back, the front has been a bit neglected. I usually cut the fritillaries back but had left 6 or 7 and I've now got an envelope with 100's of seeds. What should I do with them. It would be nice to put them back into the front garden (we've got a small area under the living room window about 1.5x2m where they came from - the rest is lawn) but I'm not really sure how to go about sowing them as I know they normally go in as bulbs.

Thanks
Shona :)

Pot them up straight away and see what happens. If they don't come up straight off, leave the pot out in the cold all winter, don't let it dry out, and see if they come up next spring. I haven't tried fritillaries, but I've had seeds come up after several years! On the other hand, very fresh seeds of the same plant will often come up striaght off.

i've grown fritillaries from seed (packet) and (some) germinated without too much trouble, but as Robert says fresh seed is so much better to have

my problem with them is slugs. Growing them in pots would be the best option wrt slugs, but if you've got 100's of seeds you can try some in the soil too

seeds can take a year or two to come up. I got bulbs, a bit dearer but quicker and more reliable.

Sow them straight away & in a pot is a good idea as when they come up for the first couple of years, they look like grass.  It's all too easy to weed them out accidentaly if you forget  :-[
is it in the sale?
