I feel this has again been very disappointing.  Is this just me?  Will is continue into the winter or shall I write it off as a failure?

I agree - pathetic little thumb-sized heads from plants that actually aren't that small - a calabrese plant the same size would produce at least a handful, maybe two... No sign of a second flush either.

Cheers.
With a microholding you always get too much or bugger-all. (I'm fed up calling it an allotment garden - it just encourages the tidy-police).

The simple/complex split is more & more important: Simple fertilisers Poor, complex ones Good. Simple (old) poisons predictable, others (new) the opposite.

Same here - very disappointing.

I have had loads off my calebrese most have produced lots of secondary heads some varieties seem to go on and on and on.  I have a good mind to send the summer psb packet back.

Mine is actually a mixed packet of several varieties, unfortunately I can't remember where I got it from. From 18 plants I have harvested a miniscule amount of heads and about half the plants are done. Hopefully this means that there will be some left for spring, I guess that remains to be seen... :)

In the meantime, the calabrese (Marathon, I think?) did really well, producing supermarket-sized heads over a fairly long period.

To be honest, I don't want them year round. When they are one of the few fresh greens around, the first few plates full are wonderful, then they get boring. So a long break from them makes me appreciate them all the more.

Same with runner beans.
