Exactly how do you know when green tomatoes are ripe?

'Green' Tomatoes - misleading? I mean unripe red or yellow ones - as shown.

True green ones show a little yellowing & soften a bit.

I do them in polenta ('whizzed' porridge oats in this case), then egg, then breadcrumbs.

These were almost too ripe.

You know Tim its almost worth growing some tomatoes just for having Fried Green Toms - one of my favourite dishes, so tasty. I only really grew cherry and plum toms this year, so seeing your photo has spurred me on to growing something a bit bigger next year  :)
