now that he 'big freeze' has started thaw things in chickens pen has gone muddy..other day we spent few hours wheelbarrowing all bedding away and changing into dry stuff.
Girls are happy now..they have clean straw under their botties..inside and outside..and we've got 'tons' of good stuff for lottie ;)
It is soooooo important to keep their living conditions comfortable this time of the year....well any really ::)

The glycerine is a really good tip, daveylamp, thanks for that.  I put it in Christmas cake icing and have some in the cupboard!

Let's hope we have no more freezing weather now I know how to keep the water liquid!

If you tip out the water each night the drinker won't freeze up. Pour in warm each morning - not too hot!
Also if you have been feeding them whole wheat for summer (less fattening) change to mixed corn as the maize is more warming for them but stays in the gut a bit longer than rolled oats (but rolled oats great for a warm treat) Also, if they are moulting some sunflower kernels help as they are more fatty and the new feathers benefit from the extra vits.
