Hmm... :-\ it is bit early for outdoors for my liking..
If the weather is not turning too harsh you might get away with it..but some sort of protection is still needed for cold night.. :-\
I haven't ever sown mine and won't do for couple of weeks yet.

Glad to hear it goodlife ... I've been carrying mine round in my breast pocket all week...  :-X

elhuerto

My sweetcorn went out last week (we haven't had any cold nights for over a month now). First time I have started them off in toilet rolls and found it much better than the pots I was using last year.
Location: North East Spain - freezing cold winters, boiling hot summers with a bit of fog in between.

Digeroo talked about planting them outside but inside plastic pop bottles as cloches.  Then taking the bottles away when the plants reach the top.

Worth a try ... if you've got s second packet sown as backup.

Elhuerto is in Spain, by the way!

Mine are also outgrowing their loo rolls thanks to sll the sunshine on my windowsill. Think I'll have to put them out and will try the pop bottle method.

im in norfolk and planted my sweetcorn direct under plastic bottles about 2 weeks ago and some are already showing! i done this last year but abit later with good results so thought i would try abit earier this year and im pleased! also tried the same with tom seeds and half of them took! ;D

I've been carrying mine round in my breast pocket all week...  ... ;D You might as well..nothing gained if weather turns cold again..they just sulk in ground/pot and don't put much growth on.
I might start fondling my seed packets next week..and start carrying them around week after that..and get to planting eventually.. ::) ;D

Forgive me as I am a learner to all this gardening malarkey, but is this a joke about carrying them around  ;D  ;D  ;D  or is it good for the seeds/corns or whatever they are called to be kept warm in a pocket??

saddad

I'm carrying them around... because I want to plant them but know better...
Harry Dodson (The Victorian Kitchen Garden) (of blessed memory) said Head gardeners used to carry Melon and Squash seed in their pockets to "warm them up" before planting...  :-X

Ellen K

It's a joke MB but I did smile at "seed packet fondling" - which many us of do, as well as looking at seed porn (catalogues, internet seed sites etc).

saddad

They are still in the breast pocket of the fleece I'm wearing...  :)

Ellen K

The anticipation was bitter-sweet but I could not stand it any longer and sowed on Easter Monday.

But the pack was sitting by the computer for a month and regularly fondled  :-[

Thanks for the explanation, I knew about seed porn DV as I too am addicted  :o

I thought I had read somewhere about seeds being carried about to keep warm but was not sure where I had read it, thanks Saddad for putting me right on that one, thought all the porn had gone to my head!!!!  ;D

I put out about 20 plants last week and have sown about 25 in the ground. :)
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

I put out a couple of dozen plants yesterday, but with bottle cloches which will stay there for a week or so. They seemed to germinate and speed off very quickly this year in root trainers. I planted more than I intend to keep though in case I lose a few over the next week, and I won't mind if I have to thin them - I had spare seed!  F1 Swift this year - last year I grew Sundance and they were rubbish!
