Today I opened one of the three bags of Erin compost that I bought. Oh dear, what a disappointment, again! Full of rubbish, lumps of all sizes that don't crumble & lots of string. Lovely, I don't think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In desperation I asked OH to phone a nursery we frequent to see if they had any clover. No, so OH looked & found a place that did but it was 11 miles away.

Off we went and.................................. I am in compost heaven ;D. I am sieving it just to make sure & there was a COUPLE of lumps in it that crumbled to the touch. Beautiful stuff.
I am now resowing thing that failed in the Which best buy.

We have been using Erin for 3 years now and although there have been a couple of stringy bits its been ok. Perhaps it depends on which batch you get.

Oh absolutely.

peat off the bog and green waste all vary wildly in consistency, so commercial compost also can vary wildly from year to year from the same source. Its a case of knowing each year who has the best compost that year. Ive been using a german make called Klassman this year, which is moss peat, its very good but almost impossible to get here. I tried Westland, JAB and another in march, they were all lumpy and rubbish.

JAB told me the year before last that I had a bag from a bad batch & they were installing finer sieving equipment, last year after sending them a sample they said it was not of usable quality. Perhaps it's my lot in life to buy from 'bad batches' BUT why I have I never had a problem with Clover?

I've emailed Erin with the batch no so will wait to see what they come back with.

I wonder if there are any courses on making you own compost ;D.

making compost is easy. Sand, loam, limestone, green waste from the kitchen.

getting a licence to extract peat from a peat bog is an entirely different affair...............
