Do you stamp your feet?

I am digging up my early potatoes and want to use this space for the millions of brassicas I seem to have grown this year. As the ground has been churned up and brassicas like firm earth I wondered whether I need to shuffle and stamp on the ground to firm it up? Anyone tried this?

I generally shuffle across the soil prior to planting brassicas, but I don't jump up and down ;D ;D

As I plant the brassicas, I earth them up a little around the stems then actually press all around them with my feet, and I never have problems, they grow nice and straight.

For brassicas I do try and stomp around all over the bed where they're going as much as possible to firm it down, and I try not to dig it over too much before this. My soil is quite firm anyway and they seem to like it!

I saw them do a shuffling process on Victorian Kitchen Garden programme, so I tend to do that.  I also puddle in brassica seedlings which I also think compacts the soil.  And then tread carefully round each plant after planting.  I do the opposite for carrots and try to laver up the soil and lighten it as much as poss.

i just plant my brassicas in loose compost only firmed from good soak with Dihydrogen Monoxide one of the most deadly chemical on earth.

I saw that too, you couldn't shuffle across the plot with your hands on your hips in these 'er parts!!
