Apple storing

Dose anyone think if I drilled hole in a old set of drawers, to let air get about, that I could store cooking apples in there ?

We are looking at different ways to store our cookers.We have put some in a wooden tray under the bed in the spare room.We never have the heating on in there. We tried the cold GH last year and one by one they rotted.
Hope they last this year just long enough until we have some freezer room

If you wrap them individually... in Newspaper or similar... and keep them cool you don't need the holes. The trick is to check regularly to stop any rots spreading...  :)

I am trying the stacking cardboard trays that the greengrocers get stuff in.  I have space in a north facing garage, so potatoes, apples, onions etc are stacked up ready for use.  Will still check regularly though.

Give the apples and onions a bit of space... keep them apart as they can pick up a taint from each other...  :-X

I have wrapped mine in newspaper and put them on cardboard in stackable bread trays .Six in all. They are in an unheated bedroom. Do I have to put a cover over them as well.
How often do they need checking cos I will need to enlist a work party ;D

The garage is given over to garden stuff (like most of the house really) so lots of space.  An ebay freezer arrived yesterday, so more will be able to go in there now.

Do I have to put a cover over them as well.

I don't think yours need any extra cover..temperature should not drop down to freezing in spare bedroom.
As for checking..as yours are wrapped in news paper (individually?)..just keep eye on for any signs of leakage.. ;) Newspaper will show damp patch. I don't go through each apple..but everytime I make a visit to my stores I have a quick look over and I try to pick those that look bit doubtfull out straight away.
