Anyone grown Toluca potatoes?

 :( As ever blight was a problem here again this year. I've grown several of the Sarpo varieties which generally do well, but they taste pants. I also grew a couple of Setana this year; they produced a crop despite blight being present in other potatoes around them. They are an improvement on flavour but I'm not keen on floury spuds.

So I'm wondering if anyone has tried Toluca potatoes? http://varieties.potato.org.uk/display_description.php?variety_name=Toluca
They are reported to have good foliage resistance to late blight so I'm thinking they may be a good one to try growing next year? But I haven't been able to find out much about taste.

Fraid I didn't, though I'll agree Setanta are epically floury .... very nice baked.... BTW, don't give up on  the Sarpo, the Axona seem to be quite nice baked, even if they are some slightly odd shapes.... I'll definitely grow them again next year if I can get seed, the bomb-proof blight resistance is great..... ditto Setanta but then I eat a lot of baked potatoes....

Thanks Crisc. Setanta baked, I just want to add butter, lots! Axona I find bordering on ok and at theri best baked, but too dry for me to love.
I guess I'll give Toluca a whirl, nothing ventured.....

Just looked for not Sarpo tuber blight resistant varieties and 'Verity' popped up.  Has anybody tried this variety?

I've not tried Verity, I believe they are good for roasting and baking but of a floury disposition, which is a shame from my point of view  :)

Bought some toluca this spring when my stored potatoes ran out. Really enjoyed them so I'm growing them myself this year.

I've just dug up my Toluca potatoes and they are monsters - fantastic!  This is  the best crop of potatoes I've had to date.  I too suffer badly with blight and tried sarpo last year which weren't particularly well anything, too dry and floury, disintergrated when boiled with no taste.  Having seen the monsters of these ones I am seriously excited about turning them into mash tonight with my lamb dish.  Will let you know how they taste!

Sounds like you have a super crop. I tried a couple last week and was pleasantly surprised. Nice large size potatoes, quite waxy tubers and tasty too. I had mine boiled but I think they would make a good mash. Look forward to hearing how you rated their taste. Mine are growing in between a row of Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Kifli. Other varieties i was growing went down with blight about 2-3 weeks ago. I cleared the other haulms but left these 3. Toluca is just holding its own, although their are some signs on the foliage, I hope the tubers are resilient. Its looking like one to grow again next year.

I also sampled some of the Kifli and they are quite nice waxy potatoes, quite impressed having tasted several of the other Sarpo's. As yet the foliage remains free of signs.

thanks!  I am extremely happy with Toluca potatoes.  They taste as good as they look and make brilliant, mash, roasted and jackets.  If anyone is in a blight area I would recommend planting these.  My partner isn't a huge potato fan but he likes these.  Definitely growing again next year.   I'm a happy girl.
