Beautiful wasp building her nest in the shed!

Hello everyone. I've recently joined this rather wonderful website, although my Wife and me have been a 'allotmenteers' for about 15 years.

Just some advice from yourselves really. We have a wasp building her nest in the allotment shed. She's a beautiful looking beastie and watching her building the nest (paper, golf ball sized at the moment) really is a joy to watch.

Mrs Wife & me are both firm believers of 'live & let live' and really don't want to destroy this rather wonderful part of mother nature at work. I've searched the internet and have had conflicting results about leaving her and her nest there.

Can you 'transfer' a nest from one place to the other? There's some old and disused sheds at the end of the allotment site. Or, can I just leave her there? I'm really don't want to destroy the nest & the wasp.

Thanks for taking the time to read...

Wasp nests shouldn't be moved as they then won't find it and will keep going back to where it was.
Leave it if you can, if not then you'll have to destroy it/them.
Bear in mind the nest will get bigger, and there'll be a lot more wasps which will  be around to at least September/October, depending on the weather.

Welcome to the site: nice people here, interesting place.

Remove and destroy the nest when she's not looking.  She will fly about a bit looking for it them move on.  Almost no harm done.  You dont want a wasps nest in your shed, trust me.

But yes, beautiful .... took this photo before removing it from outside my kitchen door.

Smile, it confuses people.

I've shared my shed with wasps a fair few times. Never been stung yet. Just leave the window open so they can get in and out.

We discovered the start of a nest, about the size of a golf ball in our lottie shed. The OH did knock it down and destroy it when the wasp flew off.I don't like harming any wildlife but I'm sure it will just build elsewhere. Some time ago the OH was very badly stung about a dozen times when he disturbed some wasps so we have a healthy respect for what they can do. :o
A few years ago we had some splendid bumblies make their home in the grassy bank by the shed door. They came and went constantly throughout the summer .they didn't bother us and we didn't bother them. Not a cross word  :)

I had them in the greenhouse two years ago and it was bad, whenever I went in there they would swarm all round me XX Jeannine

Did they sting, or just hover menacingly in front of you? I've had them in my shed repeatedly, and they've never taken the slightest notice of me.

Morning all.
Gosh, these early starts are such fun...  :o
Thankyou all for your replies, I've decided I'm going to leave her and her nest alone, as I've had a word with one of my allotment neighbours and he's said that if the worst comes to the worst I can use his shed for shelter & to store some of my tools.....
So everyone's a winner!  ;D
That really is a lovely picture, Ellen. I'm tempted to get my camera out now and see if I can try and do something similar.
Cheers...

Don't talk about your nest as you may find people decide all the wasps on the site are yours!
