It's our Summer Fayre on Sunday 19th August and I am trying to think of new things which would attract visitors.

We have all the usual - bric a brac, cakes, plants, flowers, vegetables, raffle, tombola, jams and preserves, cream teas - but I wondered if anyone could suggest something different.

All the money raised will be divided between Macmillan and Air Ambulance.

So, any ideas anyone?

Get your local morris dancers to put on a show. Or failing that why don't you all learn and perform a rain dance ;D

Ace, you may be joking but morris dancers are my absolute favourites.  We did have them a few years ago but for some unknown reason they didn't want to make a return visit.  ???  There is a local group of women morris dancers but they don't have the same appeal as the men in white trousers. ;)

You need plenty of ale to keep them coming back. Ladies Morris is just pretend stuff, They cannot invoke the fertility in the soil like the men do.

Ace beat me to it, I was going to suggest you have to ply them with large amounts of booze.  Perhaps next year you can brew some of your own.

Betty, how about guess the weight of the cake,   or guess the name of a nice teddy bear, 20p a go or whatever should bring some money in.
If you have a nice cake novelty, say fruit or veggie decoration.

How about a wine tombola, ask the allotmenteers to donate a bottle of wine each.
J 2 O, is on special at present & bucks fizz of course .
When i used to help with fundraising where i used to live we always did very well with a bottle tombola.

Dog show. Local classic cars? One of our local shows does a ring show where local groups show off what they do. The scouts and cubs put up a patrol tent this year.

Some sort of competition? Pentathlon? Get a target Mums got a rubber tipped darts board thing (archery). Get a giant jenga (against the clock) for highest. Welly throwing for longest. Some sort of obsticle course for fastest. Some thing else for the last one.......Sort out 5 different stations, age groups and scoring oh and someones to run it all  ::)

Crockery smashing!
A space? I need more plants......more plants? I need some space!!!!

I have run several pet shows which always faurites at fayres.

Classes for
Dog with the waggiest tail
Cat with the biggest eyes .
Best caged pet
Most unusual pet
Best dressed pet
Pet that looks most like it's owner
Overall best pet in the show, where winners of each class compete against each other
And my favourite, the pet the judge would most like to take home

I always found local pet stores willing to donate prizes and  rosettes are very cheap to have made and are great.
There is alwys some local celebrity happy to judge.

Oh and 1 other thing, what about a 50-50 draw.

A cookery demo - 5 ways with courgette?  Potatoes?  Beans done differently?  Summer veg medley?  Whatever is available plentifully at the time.  Given the rainbow of ethnicities on your site, this could be very multi-cultural and quite different from the usual 'english' way of cooking or preparing things.  Recipe sheets cost a small amount for the charities.

Are there 'ethnic' special herbs and vegetables grown on your site?  Perhaps a talk about growing unusual stuff that grows well, possibly with how-to-grow and recipe sheets and a few seeds.  Money (after expenses) to go to the charities.

Instruction sheets on how to make scarecrows.  Money to go to the charities.

Gardening knowledge quiz half hour?

Gardeners question time - get answers from our panel of experienced growers.

Seed swap?

A talk by a representative of the charities?

A talk about first aid on the plot, even CPR refresher. as there are many elderly plot holders, by air ambulance paramedic.

Bring your quirkiest looking fruit or veg for the 'oddest' competition.

How did I forget that one, smash a micra (spit) to bits £1 a bash, I'll be there, put me down for £20 worth. Oh, on second thoughts make that a fiver it will not last for that long.

Thank you so much for all the ideas - a lot to think about there.  And thank you ACE for giving me a laugh.  :D
