I just got an email from a new brewing company opening up near our plot and they have asked if we would like the spent barley and hops.
They reckon when they get up to speed they will have around 150kgs of spent grain (Barley) as well as around 10 kgs of Hops every week.

I know people use spent hops and I guess spent grain is good for the soil as well???

I am very happy to take this away from them but I am not sure if I can use 8000 kgs  a year!!  I dont want to say I will take it if we cant use it but its a useful offer.
Does anyone use spent grain in this way and is there a downside to adding it to the soil/compost

I can't read your message properly for some reason, but I'd certainly recommend spent hops for mulching.

Exercise caution with the spent hops as they can be toxic to dogs.

I understand that the spent grain can be used as a "green" ingredient in composting.

Go for it, you lucky fella!!
Make a simple compost frame, just chuck it in, add odd quantities of green waste from time to time.
Your soil will benefit from adding the rotted mixture.
