...we had date in Chatsworth today...and what a date we had :icon_cheers: Exchanged car full of gardening related goodies :icon_cheers: ..and we had good nosy around their kitchen gardens. I can confirm that not even posh garden have their produce growing any quicker than in humble allotments..the growth was only just starting to emerge..
I noticed they were growing their loganberries on simple wigwam supports.. :icon_cheers:...I now know what to do with mine, was struggling to find a place for my plant but seeing theirs..I'm going to do just the same :icon_cheers:
AND..the way they were growing their currants...they were dotted all over the place...took very little room and looked very pretty..like a currant fencing leaning against walls..cordon pruned currant 'bushes', planted only few inches apart. I've got plenty of those 'not quite enough room for anything' spaces...and since I was gifted some white currant bushes..those are prime candidates to make my currant 'picket' fence :icon_cheers:
You always learn something new or pick few tips when you go and see other gardens!

Sounds like you had a really brill day  :sunny:

Thanks for passing on the currant tips  :icon_cheers:

It was a lovely day with lovely people & Amber came too.

Things will be dug out that don't work hard enough for their place & more deserving things planted. There were so many currants I'm now wondering what they do with them all.

She did 'try' all the puddles and streams that was available..you can call her now 'water terrier' :icon_cheers: As for us 'all'..bit too fresh day for it..today it propably would feel lovely.

Well..what I can tell was..that they bend the stem as it grow (propably needs tying on) and once it reach the top of the supports, the top of was chopped off. The bend on the stem make it want to produce more side shoots and cutting the top  off propably does the same as well..it looked all very easy and tidy. There wasn't any new growth on the wigwam..just one or two old canes but those soon will produce lots of new growth.
I shall tell you more once I've tried it myself..but I can't see it being that different how black berries behave..and they seem to grow very well even without bending.

I'm going to give it a try, I think we have 3 spare 10' canes at the plot so they will be perfect :icon_cheers:.

We'll be going again when youngest daughter has recovered from her surgery which takes place early June so I will be taking a special interest in that one.

Thanks for the info, but I am still none the wiser.  Mind you it'll be a couple of years before I have to do it I expect from my blackberry cuttings.  Tried googling the method but came up with nowt.

grannyjanny

Lottie if my blackberries are anything to go by I don't think this method would work. When we next go I'll take a picture & get OH to post it for me.

I'm about to plant my loganberry and put some 10 ft canes up for it....as the plant start growing, I shall take photos and post here so you can see what happens. We'll see what sort of muddle I get on with it.
Blackberries are REALLY strong growers so this way of growing would only work if one is keen with secateurs and keep the growth under control ..if you don't keep up with the growth, you end up one very thorny jungle.
Which reminds me....time to go and get my secateurs out..that blackberry of mine is climbing up on my plum tree.... :BangHead:
