We've just bought some from local greengrocer as the big boys only do shallots.
We were horrified at the price £1 per pound  :angry9:
We spent £8 but need more so we're looking !
sanity is overated

We went out yesterday to buy some more.
Do you know in our town Weston Super Mare we have only ONE independent greengrocer.
There are a couple of places that sell "bits" but only ONE greengrocer .
I know having a lottie we don't use them much , we are guilty of buying from Lidl but I thought there was enough trade for more.
We used to have 3 wet fish shops alas no more  :sad10:

Just been out for some more, 'had to go to the same greengrocer as nowhere else.
Today they were 59p per pound  :cussing: I asked why and they just shrugged !!!

Found some on Saturday at £1/kg for a 4kg net.
Got 2 weeks holiday starting next week to reach my target of 50kg this year!
Should clear out the tear ducts!!

I was told many years ago that pickling onions are mostly just shallots. If this is true, why are shallots even more expensive than pickling onions?

Pescador

'Cause it's not true Russell. Shallots are lower yielding per hectare and not sold in such volume, so the price is higher.
I was asked over £2/kg for shallots on the same day I bought my onions. Also I find they are generally larger than I want for pickling

When I visited my sister in Exeter, I couldn't find one single independent butcher, baker, greengrocer or fish shop.
