Do you cut back your hostas at this time of year or just leave the leaves to wither away?  They are in pots not the ground.

Just leave them until they have wilted and then pull them off and topdress.

I cut off flower stalks as the flowers fade then leave the plants to die back naturally as, with careful watering, the foliage can look good for several more weeks.   Once it does all die down I remove it to make sure there is less shelter and food for slugs and then the pots go into a quiet corner to protect them from frost.

Come spring, I feed and water the minute I see the pointed buds appearing and that's also the moment to lift and divide if they need it.

Trespassers will be composted !

Cold snap coming here and they haven't all died down yet and a couple I split this spring has only just decided to flower so they've all been moved to the polytunnel for protection for the pots as much as the plants.    In there I can water the ones still in leaf without worrying about frost damage to the ecramic pots or roots in the smaller plastic pots.

Just the snails to watch out for now.
