Broad beans in flower

My autumn-sown broad beans have been flowering for about a week. Roughly how long before I will be picking the pods?

(just so I know when the space will be ready to plant something else in, and because I can't wait to eat something I've grown!)

You will be picking in May I would expect.

I often follow broadbeans with either carrots or leeks.

Jerry - May? wow - that's only two weeks time. Unless of course it's late May...

Moggle - Aquadulce, sown direct in October or November. Under pickle jar cloches until too big. Now smothered in flower and no black fly!!!!

We tend to pick from about the 3rd week of May through to mid July, most go straight into the freezer and we are down to the last 6 or so bags now I think.

All weather dependant though of course!

 ::)Oh I bought 900 broad bean seeds today and thought they would have to be seeded in April/May but I notice from your earlier posts that it is done in October  ??? ::)

They will be fine Marianne, as far as I know they are only sown earlier to try and avoid the worst of the Blackfly, I am trying mine in succession this year from March to May.  By the way 900 seeds seems excessive?

Marianne, normally broad beans are sown from February through April.
Aqua Dulce is a type that is specially for autumn sowing but can also be sown in early spring.

Aquilegia, my  autumn sown broad beans also started flowering about a week ago. When I read your question I looked in my little lottie book, sadly I did not write when they started flowering last year but I started harvesting on June 6th.

Depends where you are in the country a bit too: autumn sown aquadulce just don't survive outside unprotected in the wet, N. Yorks winter.

I start them in the greenhouse in Decenber instead and plant out in March...

last year my autumn sown were brilliant and i harvested in late may, this year my autumn sown and also my 2 sowings of spring sown haven't shown their face  :(

gonna start another lot indoors to plant out. must have beans...

My Autumn/winter sown are flowering too -unfortunately a lot got eaten by birds so I had a late/winter early spring sowing too -now coming on well.

Apologies guys, I read off the wrong packet !  ::)

It's a packet or radishes (975 plants) and lettuce (900 plants) and 600 onions.
The packet of broad beans only contains 40 !!  :-[

they are all from KINGS and I am going to plant them asap.

I put aquadulce seedlings (grown in a window boX!) into the lottie  about 3 weeks ago and they are doing well.  No flowers yet though!

Well I have finally put the radishes, broad beans and coriander in my mini greenhouse and hope for a speedy germination .... ::) ::) :D
