I have always crammed mine really full to give lots of colour.  What kind of plants are you using as that will make a difference to how many you need?

I have 14" baskets and would put in about 12 lobelia, 6 allysum, 3 geraniums. 3 petunias and two trailing fuschias with some nastursium seeds as an extra.  if you are using surfinas or other new petunia type plants they spread a lot more and you would need a lot less plants.  When I have been very busy and need a quick basket I have just put in loads of lobelia, just all red or the mixed ones are quite effective.

I have a book on container gardening which has lots of ideas in, you could try your local library.  Or any of these sites might have something:

Hi loll. Although  a novice I always do hanging baskets and tubs/  it does depend on the plants you put in. I like to use ivy leafed geraniums (don't know proper name) which have reached a 30in drop. also trailing fu*hsias, trailing lobelia, geraniums, busy lizzies.  In fact almost anything I have and fancy at the time. I am eagerly awaiting time to hang out... they  are really getting quite good  at the moment. I am fed up with hitting my head on them when I go in the greenhouse. Happy gardening Lorna.
