Post by: tim on July 30, 2005, 08:48:34
A bit young yet, but wanted some before the slugs do their worst!

(That's a 4" pot)

That looks lovely to me Tim.

I have just been given some young plants in pots, is it too late to put them in and get a crop?

I think you'll find it's a bit late. But if it's trench celery, it might be worth a go.

I'll put them in this afternoon and trench them up....I was assured that it's a trench variety.

Thanks for the advice Tim

This is self-blanching. Earlier.

I have grown a self blanching celery for the first time this year (1st time growing any kind of celery), had the first lot earlier in the week with the roast garlic and courgette soup, it was lovely. And the celery tastes wondeful, nothing like what you buy in the shops, a stronger and better flavour. Will definitely be growing more next year. :)

Hmmm, so why is mine so small?  I have a self blanching variety - can't rememebr name of course, planted next to my celeriac.  Both are good and strong, but both about equal in sizes, and that is small!  However, both in dappled shade - could this, and the lack of 'extra' water be the problem?

I think yours is VV's Full White', Emma.

These are our 2 lots - the first suffering from the long drought: the 2nd lot doing better. They do say full sun, but that compounds the water problem. And, being so closely planted, they should have lots.

Also, the Celeriac to date  Two plantings.

Pick some young self blanching variety this weekend.  It is shaded by raspberry canes but this has stopped it drying out and it is still growing.

What is the theory behind growing celeriac and lettuce together? Mine are together but purely by accident.

nothing other than intercropping, jesse :)
tim was teasing me saying if the celeriac became too big before the lettuces were harvestable, he would hold me responsible :)

Ah I see, I was hoping it was a fail safe slug deterrent or something like that because most of my lettuces have been attacked by slugs but they seem to be leaving the celery and celeriac alone for now ;D
