Title: Eagle Owl.
Post by: eileen on January 27, 2005, 18:13:04
Just heard that one of these magnificent birds has been spotted at Balerno which isn't far from where I stay.  ;D Not sure yet if it's an escapee or if someone has deliberately released it into the wild. It's been seen hunting deer and, would you believe it, cats!!

Guess where Ian and I are off to at the week-end with our cameras, scope and binns!?!

Can't wait.

Keep your fingers crossed that we actually see it.

There was a piece on this in the Scotsman on Wed. Eileen.  It seems some stupid folk are deliberately releasing the Eagle Owls into Scotland cos they believe at one time they were native to this part of the UK.  I see there is quite a lot of threads on this in Bird Talk, read them all last night.

Thanks Carol that's cleared it up for me.  :) Don't these people know what havoc they can cause when they release birds of that size into our countryside?

(I'd still like to see it though and hopefully get a picture of it!!)

I have seen them a few times in captivity, quite handsome birdies, hope you manage to catch a sight of it.   The folk in Balerno and Currie had better watch their cats tho.

A couple of years ago there was an Eagle Owl seen in Newcastle City Centre!!

It landed on a wall outside of our canteen at work so I was lucky to see it at v.close range through the window.

They are indeed very handsome birds.
