Give them time. I only planted mine out yesterday. They may be reacting to the temperature, but they'll pick up.

Goodness me. Runner beans at this time of year should only just be starting to twirl around the canes.

In fact it is not too late to start some new beans off for a harvest.

Once they get going, they will show you where the pantomime 'Jack and the beanstalk' came from.

Give your beans a dose of epsom salts mixed in your watering can when you next water..that may help.

Mine are not even in yet. They are in containers at the moment and stand around 3" high. They will go in this weekend at some point.
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Yep. i took a risk and sowed my runners outside early and they survived [just ::)] and are now beginning to twine. they look a bit frazzled and palish but I think its been a bit cool and windy for them although I had pity and have covered them a bit at nights. If you're really worried they are poorly i think a few chicken pellets might help. Sounds to me they may have a bit too much potash from somewhere especially as they are flowering so soon, balance it with a bit of nitrogen if necessary but they should get away if well watered and warm. If they wilt look at the roots. Mine had maggots the other year and i drenched with dilute jeyes fluid... and most survived for a good crop. Best of luck :)

Might be a magnesium deficiency (couple of teaspoons of Epsom Salts in a watering can and water it in) but it's more likely to have been the cold evenings recently.... my father wouldn't have eve sown runner beans by now back in my childhood it was something for the second weekend in June, along with the sweetcorn, courgettes, gherkins, ridge cucumbers etc.....

My Scarlet emperor are just poking their heads above water and now have put on their second leaves.
They seem not so good as the painted lady which is by far a better bean to grow in my mind.

Got them back now to put some tread on them

Mine are 6"- 9" high and starting to twine.
Nothing is ever as it seems. With appropriate equations I can prove this.

My nother in law always had fantastic runner beans and she always sowed 6th June direct into the ground.

thanks for all your comments i have now planted out an old favourite of mine "streamline" in pots in greenhouse and will prepare a new trench on a another patch on my plot with loads of muck. Happy days peter :D ;)

We're predicted some more cold temperatures at night up until Saturday night.... guess my outside bean planting (and the rest of the sweetcorn, and the outdoor toms) will have to be delayed until Sunday.... which is a pain cos I've got a couple of days off work tomorrow adn Friday, would have been handy to get them done.... oh well, I'm not short of things to do on the plot ATM :-)
