Yo peeps

Just ordered me strawberry plants from Thomson & Morgan... I iz getting 20 Maxim strawberry plants for £10.00..... they iz gonna be in strawberry pots they iz ... I got those half price back along at B & Q and paid £5.00 each they hold 6 plants each... so I was wondering... will I have to buy 4 more plants or will I be able to take a runner from the plants at a later date?   its all new to me... and feel a lil bit dafty cuz I dont understand how strawbs grow.. same last year with toms... I though what the flip are trusses?  and would look everyday for the thing I would not recognise.... but sure enough all the information fell into place.... so really I is bragging and asking at the same time....

and just dreamt of the HUGEST strawberry in the world... dream was dead vivid it was and I saw the strawberry ripening... dead good it was... then woke up wiv angover cuz celebrations start early round here....

Thanks peeps

Oz

Hey Ozzy I need some advice on strawberries toooo.

But Im starting mine from seed (I like a challenge).  I was wondering how long they take to come up.  Unfortunately I've lost the seed packet...I think they are called 'Delicious' or 'Delight' ???

They were sown about 2 weeks ago, I know its late in the day for strawberry sowing, and Im probably being really impatient!

Any advice welcome... :)

Yo Andi

I was gonna do the seed thang too... tis more natural I think but time being what it is and the fact that me alpine strawbs havent made an appearance yet..... and just now when in Tescoes to buy the boooze  ::) I looked at strawberry seeds  Â£1.99 and they were called "Temptation"  I couldn't say whether you iz too late or not.... as its all brand new to me.. the outdoor malarky anyway  ::)

gonna check me grow house and see whether me alpines strawbs are making a go of it?

cheers

Ozzy, you will eventually be able to take runners from your strawberries, but these are not usually produced until the summer, and they will not produce more fruiting plants for this year.  It`s a good idea not to allow more runners this year than you actually need to increase your stock- nip off all the surplus ones close to the plants to allow the plants to build up for next year.

When the runners appear wait until the little plantlets form on them, then plant the little plantlets in pots and nip off any further length of runner that grows beyond them. Sever the runners as soon as the plantlets have rooted.

Oz - I started off with eight strawberry plants about this time last year, lost two, then had a small crop off the rest. I pinched off any runners that appeared while they were fruiting so the energy went into the fruit. After fruiting, I pegged down runners. Now they've rooted, I have about 25 plants, so I'm hoping for a bit more of a crop this year!

They do not fruit well in their first year. Second year is the best, apparently - I hope so anyway. It is a good idea to peg down runners so you are constantly replacing your stock.

As for other holes - how about some trailing plants just for something pretty?
gone to pot :D

Very jealous about your £5 strawberry pots Oz. The cheapest ones I've seen are £12  :-\
I'm still deciding if this is worth it, or if I should go for grow-bags.
Good luck with it  :)

I was just doing a search for 'strawberry planter' and found instructions for this:

Which I think is very cool, and I may just give it a go. Cheapness and strawberryness  ;D ;D ;D

Twas i Oz .i used to grow mine in an old plastic dustbin with holes burned through with an old piece of metal piping heated up.Smaller holes in the bottom of course and a plastic tube down the middle with holes in for watering.
Ive gone all posh now with a proper bought one.Pressy of course.

Yo BB

Nice one... think that is brill idea and if those planters were not half price then I would have used a dusty bin 321 hahhahhaa... think on a balcony moggle will look fabbo when it all starts a growing... remember to cover the ripening fruit... cuz the birdies will eat all your strawbs ifs you iz not carefull....... which reminds me... to all peeps who shoot geese..... they is not being offensive they isn't.... they just fly that way and aint sticking the V's up/down to you honest... so put away that shotgun and stop being so sensitive.... glad thats sorted...  ;)

Mrs Ava

oooo, I used to grow my petunias in pots like that, a nice one at the bottom and then plassy ones upwards.  The bigger the bottom one the more pots you can make.  Used to look great!  I shall do it again me thinks.  Thanks for the reminder Moggle.  ;D

Moggle

Glad to be of service, considering I've asked for so much info on this site  :D
